This article highlights the case of A., a Sudanese asylum seeker, who was illegally pushed back to Libya by Italian authorities in 2018. The Italian authorities, in violation of international law and human rights, collaborated with Libyan forces to intercept and return migrants to Libya, a country known to have unsafe detention centres. A tribunal in Rome has ruled in favor of A, recognizing that the Italian actions were unlawful and caused him immense suffering. The core message is that Italy's actions in illegally refouling migrants to Libya violate international legal obligations and expose individuals to torture and human rights abuses.
